Fort Richardson, Virginia
April 3rd 1864
Dear Wife,
I will not write now only to give you directions for you to come out. You will first take the boat at New London for Jersey City and from there you will take the cars for Washington and when you get to Washington, tell a hack man that you wish to cross to Fort Richardson and he will take you to the Provost Marshal’s Office to get a pass and you must bring this letter and one or two others so that you can show that you have a husband over here or you can’t get a pass. Any old letters that I have sent you will do.
From your husband, — Chester A. Chapman, Co. D, 1st C. V. A.
Fort Richardson
Arlington Heights, Va.
Bring this with you, Mat. Come as soon as you get this.
Pet, if you are not to come, let me know as soon as you get this so that I can give up looking for you. Yours as ever, — Chester
P. S. If you come, don’t forget that you are to bring all the money that you can for I can’t tell when we shall be paid. — Chester Chapman

Hand the above to anyone in the office that the hackman takes you to for you will have to show some proof that you are to visit some person over here or you can’t get a pass. Your husband, — C. A. Chapman
