Chapman may have used the following pass to go to Alexandria to have the pictures taken that he spoke of in his letter of 22 February 1863.

Private C. A. Chapman (Orderly) Co. D, 1st C. V. A., has permission to visit Alexandria and return until 11 o’clock P. M. this day.
