Dear Mat,

I am back in the state at last but as far from home as ever for I have no money to get home with. If I had, I would come. I don’t know whether I shall get my State check or not. If I do, I will come home on the 23rd & 24th of this month. It is worse for me to be here so near you when I can’t get where you are than it is to be off in Virginia. If I had five dollars, I would come in place of sending this letter, but I have not got enough money to buy a postage stamp to send a letter with. I suppose I have got to stay here until our regiment gets home or be sent off to regiment and I had much rather go there than to stay here if I can’t get home. I will close now hoping this will find you well and happy for I ain’t.

Yours truly.
